Distinguishing Units in Battalion

Battalion:Nemesis suffered from a few minor problems. We’ve been addressing all of these in preparation for the future release of both Arena, the multiplayer add on, and Ghosts and Vengeance the two remaining episodes from the Battalion trilogy.

One particular issue reported by beginning players was that it was sometimes difficult to distinguish the different units. The jayisgames review, for example, especially brought to light to the fact that some units were almost impossible to tell apart when they ended their turn in an up or down facing position. As the reviewer pointed out, there is no gameplay distinction between a unit facing up and a unit facing down, so confusing players in this manner was not providing any tangible benefit.

This is the first thing we fixed. At the end of each turn, any units that were facing up or down are adjusted so that they are facing left and right. This definitely helped improve the readability of the various units.

But, as we added more units to the roster, it became obvious that it was increasingly difficult for beginners to tell units from one another. There were also a few inconsistencies in the unit designs that hurt the overall cohesion of the unit graphics.

There was no group of units that exemplified these issues more than the sea units. They shared too many similar characteristics. It was unfair to expect a first time player to distinguish a Battlecruiser from a Corvette when they looked so similar.

So, your first glimpse at the new unit graphics comes in the form of the new and improved sea units. Here’s a comparison between the old and new ones.

This is really great. Good work! I’m really excited for the sequels. The original game is one of the best flash games I’ve ever played. Thanks!

  2. when can we expect the new game?

  3. Not many problems I had from Battalion: Nemesis. Most of the units I can see both mine and adversary. At least now the update allows players to easily distinguish their own units.

  4. wow this is really coming along. These look great in comparison to the older ones. I really can not wait for the beta.

Did anyone notice that in Nemesis, your u-boats look different than your enemies. Plus the simple difference between the corvette and battlecruiser is position of the guns. Corvette=vertical, battlecruiser=horizontal.
